Okuribi

Okuribi

August 16 was the day in Kyoto when fire was lit in the shape of characters on mountains to send off the spirits of ancestors who had visited us during Obon time. This is called "Okuribi," or bonfire, and is held every year on five mountains in Kyoto City. The photo shows a 472-meter mountain "Nyoigatake", which is set on fire by the character for "large". I took this picture from a crossing near Ginkakuji Temple.
