beetle 2

eating the jelly

One of the first science lessons at primary school in Japan is "Bodies of Insects". When my daughter was in the third grade, her teacher gave the pupils a test during science class, and the questions were about insects. One of them was, "What do beetles eat?" The old teacher expected tree sap, watermelons, apples etc. for the answer, not knowing that nowadays they sell small containers of "jelly for insects" with better nutrition for the bugs. Of course, many children wrote about the jelly. The poor teacher reluctantly marked their answers "correct," and we parents laughed a lot.
