drill

from a friend

I spend a great deal of time preparing new grammar exercises for my students. In spite of this, they are sometimes not successful. The other day, we practiced saying in Japanese, "It has been xx years since someone did ---." First, I showed an example, "You began to study Japanese 2 years ago. Then you can say, it has been 2 years since you began to study Japanese." I continued, "You came to Kyoto 3 years ago, so, it has been 3 years since you came to Kyoto." As the student seemed quite comfortable with this drill, I went on. "Then how about this? I got married 25 years ago. That is...?" Then he smiled and answered amusingly, "Oh, you love your husband very much!!", which was far from the reply I had expected. I just began to repeat the explanation, wondering whether I should have made the cue less exciting.
