bell-cricket

Bell-crickets are one of the insects that the Japanese love. They chirp in early autumn. Listening to their ringing sound, we feel the change of seasons. It is simply poetic and refined. Once, my daughter raised some bell-crickets at home in a cage. Looking into the cage, our home-stay student for that year asked us innocently, "So, what is the difference between bell-crickets and cockroaches?" My daughter and I were at a loss for words. After a few seconds, she cried, "They are NOTHING LIKE each other!!!"
Even though we were surprised at the question, it was a very good opportunity to think about our cultural bias.

Please listen to bell-crickets' sound.
