This is a pen.

When studying English in Japan, the first sentence in any textbook is 
'This is a pen.'  
Many Japanese people laugh at this sentence, wondering when we will ever need to say this.
One of my friends recently took a business trip to Europe. In the airport upon her return, a baggage inspector spotted something on the monitor as her bag passed through surveillance. He called my friend to his side, pointed at the object, and inquired, "What is this in your bag?" After decades of studying and speaking English, she finally had the chance to actually say, "This is a pen, sir."




It can be a long pointer, if necessary
