grandma

I have a very cute child as a student. One day he was very happy because his grandmother came and would spend a few month with his family. He was so excited and asked me, "Do you have a grandma?" At my age, grandparents are normally not alive any more. So I answered, "I did. But she passed away." That shocked him. He became silent, opened his eyes wide and after a second, said, "Gomennasai", which means "I'm sorry", but is only used when you apologize. I was quite unhappy to correct such condolence with sympathy, but I did for his Japanese language improvement.(-_-)
