my family name

My family name "Shiomi" is written as "塩見" in Kanji (Chinese characters). "塩(shio)" is "salt" in English and "見(mi)" means "to see". So as a whole, it means "to see salt". Today I explained it to one of my students. Listening to that, he uttered nothing but stared at my face. This is a very common reaction that I have when I explain about my family name. His eyes were definitely saying, "Oh, what a silly name she has!" ････I have to agree with him.
