When I first taught an Arabic student, I was embarassed because he didn't take notes on the lesson at all. He just continued to repeat what I said whilst watching my mouth. Afterwards I got to know that was the same way as memorizing the Koran.
One day he showed me a picture of a pretty young lady with a scarf on her head. "This is my financee", said he happily. It was a very heart-warming moment for me, too.
